When it comes to being healthy, we’re becoming more and more aware about what we’re putting into our bodies. We know to stay away from unhealthy, processed food, as well as anything that’s been sprayed with pesticides, but it’s also important to recognize the real effects of the chemicals and hormone disrupters in many mainstream products in the spa industry. It turns out; many of your favourite everyday spa products might be secretly packed with ingredients that are actually wreaking havoc with your hormones.

Your endocrine system is the system in which all of your hormones are secreted into the blood. When your body comes in contact with everyday toxins and pollutants, your hormones become affected. Bottom line – pollutants trick our hormones into acting in different ways than they’re naturally supposed to behave – and so they’re called ‘endocrine disruptors’. These common chemicals have been linked to reproductive abnormalities and other hormonal imbalances for both women and men.

When it comes to mainstream products in the spa industry, here are three common hormone disrupters to watch out for:

(1) BPA PA (bisphenol A) is a chemical that is added to many commercial products, including food containers and many mainstream hygiene and wellness products. When BPA containers are made, not all of the BPA gets sealed. This allows part of the chemical to break free and mix with the container’s contents. Several studies show that BPA can negatively affect many aspects of both male and female fertility, which is why it’s important to invest in natural products from Moor spa that are completely free of synthetic preservatives, parabens, sulfates, artificial colors, fragrances and other petroleum-derived chemicals.

(2) Phthalates is another endocrine disruptor found in many mainstream hygiene and wellness products. Studies have shown that phthalates can trigger what’s known as “death-inducing signalling” in men’s hormone cells, making them die earlier than they should. As a result, imbalances in the male reproductive system as well as obesity, diabetes and thyroid irregularities can occur.

(3) Parabens are among the most controversial endocrine-disrupting chemicals found in many mainstream products in the spa industry. Parabens are commonly used as inexpensive preservatives to prolong shelf life and are proven to mimic estrogen in the human body. Not only have they been found to build up in essential hormone regulating organs, but they have also been linked to certain types of cancers.

What to Look for Instead

  • 100% naturally derived, free of free of synthetic preservatives, parabens, sulfates, artificial colors and fragrances, and petroleum-derived chemicals such as PEG, propylene glycol or mineral oil.
  • Look for products that contain natural perfumes made from essential oils and botanical ingredients.
  • If a product contains botanical ingredients, ensure the plants have been treated organically and without the use of pesticides. The source of every ingredient used should be as a 100% Natural Source Guarantee.
  • Always look for environmentally friendly packaging options like Moor Spa’s d2w packaging. Packaging that includes a substance called d2w is a great alternative that’s not only environmentally friendly, but also protects the health and safety of consumers. This substance causes the treated plastic to become fully biodegradable in the presence of oxygen after the natural shelf life of the product has expired.

Product Safety is Our Highest Priority

At Moor Spa, product safety is one of the most important factors in our formulation process, and we pride ourselves on the natural products we deliver. Moor Spa products and d2w packaging are rated as some of the safest products in the spa industry. Our products are completely free of synthetic preservatives, parabens, sulfates, artificial colors and fragrances and petroleum-derived chemicals such as PEG, propylene glycol or mineral oil. The source of every ingredient that we use is listed in a 100% Natural Source Guarantee for each product.

Packaging Made Friendly

Moor Spa has partnered with Symphony Environmental, a UK based company and its packaging suppliers to produce a range of its existing packaging that includes a substance called d2w. This causes the treated plastic to become fully biodegradable in the presence of oxygen after the natural shelf life of the product has expired. Rather than taking over 500 years to decompose, the packaging biodegrades in as little as six months both on land and in the ocean.
